KENDANG atau GENDANG

Kendang/Kendhang/Gendang adalah instrumen dalam gamelan Jawa, Sunda, Bali, yang salah satu fungsi utamanya mengatur irama. Kendang pada gamelan sunda, jawa, dan bali, berbeda bentuk, bunyi, serta nama. Instrumen ini dibunyikan dengan tangan, atau dengan alat bantu yang biasa disebut “panakol kendang” (Sunda). Jenis kendang yang kecil disebut Ketipung (Jawa)/Kulanter (Sunda), yang menengah disebut Kendang Ciblon/Kebar (Jawa). Pasangan ketipung ada satu lagi bernama Kendang Gedhe biasa disebut Kendang Kalih (Jawa)/Kendang Indung (Sunda).

 

            Kendang kebanyakan dimainkan oleh para pemain gamelan profesional, yang sudah lama menyelami budaya Jawa/Sunda. Kendang kebanyakan di mainkan sesuai naluri pengendang, sehingga bila dimainkan oleh satu orang dengan orang lain maka akan berbeda nuansanya.
